Description
The Wool Cowl Cucullus is a high medieval everyday garment with a short sendelbinde, i.e. short tip which was worn in this form mostly for pragmatic reasons by hunters, peasants and travelers for protection against wind and weather. Our example is closed at the front and made of heavy wool felt which can also withstand a heavy downpour.
From the 14th century, it begins its entry into the fashion world and is now often worn colorfully or with an overlong sendelbinde which is looped around the neck, as can be seen in the murals at Runkelstein Castle near Bolzano.
Even though it is historically a man's garment, it also enjoys great popularity among women, especially at LARP, and is incorporated into many different costume concepts.
